Yoga and Meditation
My first exposure to Yoga was reading the Bhagavad Gita in high school. Years later, I attended my first 'yoga' class, and was scratching my head trying to figure out how these two things fit together. The class at the studio presented a series of exercises, promoting flexibility and balance, but really said nothing about what I'd thought Yoga meant. The word yoga is Sanskrit. It comes from the same root as the English word 'yoke'. That said, it is a practice to bind, unite, or integrate things. In the Gita, yoga is defined as one-pointed focus, selfless service, joyful participation in life... and the list goes on. For me, the definition of yoga changes periodically, but mostly it means paying attention. The practice of yoga is any action that brings you into that state of awareness, beyond the level of conditioned mind, a place of pure presence. Yoga can be achieved through prayer, service, music, study, nature... the paths are many, but the goal is always a sense of connection with self, other, stillness, awe. The popular branches in the west aim to heal the body and mind by training awareness, gradually growing past self-imposed limits and attachment. The physical practices are a vital step to regain natural concentration and poise within the body, opening the door to the inner journey of meditation. These practices create harmony and shift our perspective, but the goal is reached only when the lessons are carried off the mat and applied to our lives. I offer instruction in the whole path, focused mainly on the physical and meditative aspects of this art, with occasional dips into the esoteric and musical sides. I prefer private sessions, the way yoga was taught for most of its history. This allows me to work with a client's individual conditions and tailor my instruction for maximum benefit. Working one on one, the whole process can go much deeper, applying yoga perspective to such varied aspects as diet, lifestyle, relationships, inner life, and work - things that would rarely be addressed in a group class. I also teach group classes at times. Lessons emphasize correct postural alignment, safe/sustainable technique, and playful reminders to stay centered in the heart. |
